More than 20 people have lost their lives in the latest spate of bomb attacks in Iraq on Monday.

About five bombs went off in the majority Shia Muslim areas, bringing the national death toll over the past week to 200. There has been a steady spike in sectarian violence following clashes at a Sunni protest camp in the northern part of the country.

Some 20 people had died last week when security forces broke up a Sunni protest near Kirkuk.

Iraq has been bogged down by an ugly spiral of civil war ever since the US troops left the country in 2011.
